Magpie by Don Schoenfeld
This carved wood Magpie is 9” wide x 13” in length and 19” in height and the carving on this bird is exquisite - with each feather being defined and it is painted in iridescent colours of magpies. The painting on this bird took over 40 hours but it was so worth it. This Magpie is balanced on top of an antler much like they do in the wild. Magpies are incredibly smart and beautiful birds.

Don is a Saskatchewan resident who works with reclaimed metals serendipitously transforming them into art. He also enjoys wood carving. Wood carving projects primarily consist of bass or tupelo birds that are indigenous to Saskatchewan. The skills he has acquired from forty plus years in the welding and construction trades now innovatively serve him in creating artwork.
The genesis of a project is sometimes inspired by seeing an image in the shapes of recycled metals. The fun then grows in watching the work take shape and evolve into the completed piece. He likens the process to a game most kids play in the summer – “What images do you see in the clouds?” Other times he knows how he wants the finished piece to look, and the process is reversed by looking for shapes that fit a preconceived image. Either process is enjoyable and challenging.
Don’s art is on display at Dandelion Art Framing & Gallery. He was part of the show called “Of Metal & Petal” held at Dandelion in November 2021.
